Introduction
RGS Newcastle is the north east’s leading independent school for boys and girls aged 7–18 years. Founded by Thomas Horsley in 1525, RGS is the city’s oldest learning institution in the city. The main entry points to the schools are at ages 7, 9, 11, and sixth form.
Admission in 7+ and 9+ is through a class assessment where a series of activities and academic exercises are conducted based on English, Maths, and PE tasks. Admission to tyne royal grammar school
The admission and selection process to RGS Newcastle is designed to test students’ potential to cope with their challenging academic curriculum. To make the admission process easy to understand for both the parents and children, the school has a dedicated head of admission available there to offer help, advice, and guidance along the way.
For admission into year 7 in RGS Newcastle, an application must be submitted by mid-December. The entrance assessment in the leading independent school take place in the second half of January and includes the English, Maths, and Reasoning test. All selected candidates are invited back for the interview.

To apply and join the RGS family, you need to complete an online registration form before the deadline, usually in mid-December. The deadline for parents applying for the bursary is earlier than expected (that is, near the end of November). Newcastle royal grammar school takes no registration fee for the entrance exam. Exam format for Newcastle upon tyne royal grammar school
The RGS main entrance 11+ exam consists of three papers English, Maths, and Reasoning.
- The English paper is of 50 minutes and consists of reading comprehension and creative writing.
- The Maths exam is for 45 minutes and consists of arithmetic and problem-solving.

Maths

Compared to other 11+ exams, the reasoning section in the RGS Newcastle 11 plus exam is generous and designed to give applicants enough time to think about the questions. This section includes a range of verbal and non-verbal reasoning questions.
Although these questions are comparatively easy, a child must have enough practice to get familiar with question styles so that they do not get nervous and face these questions easily.
Interview
The applicants selected in the 11+ entrance exam are then invited for the interview section—this section tests which kid is suitable for the school environment.
