Admissions to Birmingham Grammar Schools

For admission to Birmingham grammar schools, pupils need to sit for the 11 plus exam and for that parents need to register their child for the 11 plus exam before the deadline. We recommend parents attend open events of their preferred school to know more about the school and their admission process. These open events help parents to decide whether the school they have chosen is right for their child or not.

For more information about the admission process, visit the Birmingham Grammar Schools Consortium website.

Registration for the 11 Plus Exam for Birmingham Consortium

Parents must register their child for a Year 7 place at the Birmingham Grammar School before June. After this, they can complete their Common Application Form (CAF) online via the Birmingham City Council website before October. They can select more than one preferred school in that form.

Your child can sit the entrance test when they are in year 6, you can register your child for the entrance test when he is in year 5.

For students who do not fall under the required birth range, for example, if they are taught in a group higher or lower than their usual cohort, parents can contact the admission period during the registration period. Parents may need to contact the admission office with a letter from the primary school confirming their child is taught outside their normal age group with other evidence during registration. Such kids only have one opportunity to sit the entrance test, and any offer will be withdrawn if the application is found out to be misleading.

Shared registration with Warwickshire grammar schools

The Grammar Schools in Birmingham shares their entrance test with the Warwickshire County Council and grammar schools in Warwickshire. This means if your child sits for the Birmingham entrance test, he will be eligible to apply for any of the grammar schools in Warwickshire. Similarly, applicants sitting in the Warwickshire can be eligible to apply for any grammar schools in Birmingham.

Parents must only apply for the entrance test in either Birmingham or Warwickshire. Parents must tick the relevant box on the test registration form to share the results.

11 Plus Exam Format of Birmingham Grammar Schools

The Birmingham 11+ exam consists of two papers that are approximately 50 minutes each. All eight schools within the consortium use this same test. Questions are multiple-choice which assesses a child’s verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning skills, Reading Skills, and Numerical Reasoning.
Parents will receive the results from the 11 plus exam online in October. To know more about the 11 plus exam, read our complete guide on the 11 plus exam for parents.

What is the pass mark for Birmingham grammar schools?

There is no set pass mark for the 11+ in Birmingham. Places are offered to children with the highest qualifying scores, which will vary from the year and between eight schools! When parents receive the child’s results, they will be informed of the lowest qualifying scores for each grammar school over the past three years. Parents can then make their decision on where to apply based on this.
