When King Edward VI Grammar School has more applicants than available places, it follows the over-subscription criteria, which gives priority to –

  • Boys with the top 120 score and live within the catchment area.
  • The following 30 places are given to top scorers regardless of where they live
  • 2 out of the 30 places are given to ‘Looked after’ children or those who were ‘previously looked after’.
  • Children of UK service personnel and Crown servants with a confirmed posting within the priority area.

For further information, you can look at the school’s admission policy on the school’s website.

Catchment area of KEGS

KEGS, Chelmsford, has a priority catchment area for year seven admission, i.e., 12.5 miles from the school. You can further check the Catchment area finder for more information.

The 11 Plus Exam Format

Kegs is a member of the CSSE and therefore has the same 11 plus test as other CSSE schools to ensure that students sitting for more than 1 CSSE school don’t have to give the test again and again. The entry to the Kegs depends on the boy’s performance in the 11+ exam.

The 11+ exam consists of two papers –

  1. English – This section focuses on comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, verbal reasoning and creative writing.
  2. Maths – This section contains questions based on the KS2 Syllabus.

The test scores are age-standardised to ensure fairness to all applicants. You can learn more about the standardised score and calculate your standardised score with our Essex 11+ pass mark calculator using your practice score.

How to prepare for KEGS 11 plus exam

To prepare for Kegs and strengthen your preparation, we always suggest students practice 11+ past exam papers. It helps them get familiar with the format, know their strengths and weaknesses, and work accordingly. If you wish to know more about the 11 plus exam and what it includes, read our 11 plus guide for parents.

English: To enhance your child skills for the 11+ English test, work on the child’s comprehension, writing, spelling, and vocabulary skills.

Comprehension requires the child to understand the complex text and connect ideas to understand what the author is trying to convey. Learn seven comprehension strategies that will make your child a powerful reader. When it comes to improving vocabulary, reading is the most popular way. Still, sometimes it can get monotonous for the child, try playing fun games, quizzes, etc., to improve his vocabulary. You can also try our 11+ vocabulary module that is proven to be beneficial for many children.

The other very important skill in CSSE 11+ exam is creative writing. To improve your child’s creative writing skills, you can encourage your child to take our popular creative writing courses for 11 plus and 11 plus Online Tuition Lessons.

Maths:  11+ Math test is based on the key stage 2 syllabus, and therefore your child must be well versed with it. You can learn more about the 11 Plus Maths Exam and how to prepare for it.
